Meet eKing, the ‘alternative’ House Representative for Ormoc, 4th district

by EVMail News on February 7, 2010

BUSINESSMAN WESLEY Chu has found a novel way of “repackaging” his business. Chu is the proprietor of King’s Houseware, which sells a variety of items for the home.
Cashing in on the political fever, he has “fielded” his own candidate, “eKing”, as “House Representative”.
Just as local candidates launched their jingles and ditties over the airwaves this week, Wesley also launched “eKing’s” catchy jingle to the tune of “You’ve got a feeling”, which could be mistaken for that of a legitimate candidate’s, not unless one listens closely and hears the mention of “Kaldero..ug plato…Kings Houseware…kompleto;
Lets go ther..together (adto sa Kings houseware) …Its cheaper…forever
Lets go ther, Gother, Gother…Its cheaper…forever …and ever
Aduna koy Feelin’ (Whooohoooo).
Even so, some have been led to believe he is a legitimate candidate. Anabel, a housemaid, asked “Ate, kinsa man diay na si eking? Mudagan diay na siya?”.
“eKing”, whose “campaign materials” include huge colorful banners showing the caricaturized face who is largely suspected to be Wesley Chu himself, except that the lower portion of the face was distorted for a comical look, is also the only “candidate” in Ormoc and the 4th district who is now getting away with blatant “electioneering”.
This early, his colorful streamers read, “Vote eKing” complete with the slogan “Ang Balay nga Kompleto… Mo Asenso”.
Nobody has filed a disqualification case against him for it, and probably never will.
Residents in the city and those from outside have taken notice of the streamers, to the point they even backtrack on their steps to take a second look at who this comic-looking candidate is – only to realize “eKing” is nobody but the product of a fertile imagination of businessman who wanted customers to remember his store through the power of “name recall”.
Wesley Chu himself expressed surprise at the reaction his campaign for his houseware store has generated.
They range from the amused to the amazed. Some relations, on the other hand, have expressed apprehensions if he was not treading on “dangerous grounds”. The Chinoys of Ormoc are known to steer clear of politics and some are uncomfortable at his tongue-in-cheek ad campaign.
As politics heat up here in Ormoc and the 4th district between the ruling Codillas and actor Richard Gomez and his group who are challenging the status quo, “eKing” however, couldn’t be an “alternative”. By Lalaine M. Jimenea
