LUCY TORRES-Gomez, Ormoc’s homegrown beauty and one of the most respected stars in our local tinseltown, has broken her silence and is urging her husband Richard Gomez’s political opponents “to take the high road”.
In a Skype videoconference with Lucy, she answered “warnings” leveled against her and her husband by Edwin Codilla and Winnie Codilla, that they could destroy her modeling career with a perjury case, which will affect her various endorsements.
Edwin Codilla, around two weeks ago in an interview with this reporter, said that the controversial Community Tax Certificates of Richard and Lucy could cost them their jobs and endorsements. This was reiterated by Winnie Codilla himself, in an interview this week. (see story on Winnie)
The porcelain beauty, the face of many advertisements for beauty products, said “I am not threatened by that. (As artistas) our life is an open book”, she said, adding that the only reason why they are being threatened such is because their opponents know that they will never give up on their quest to give Ormoc and the fourth district a better representation.
“We will never give up”, she said.
She added she is sad to think how low politics have gone in Ormoc City. “This is not the Ormoc I know”, even adding that these were not the Codillas she knew.
“Sayang”, she said, “they started very bright”. Lucy was apparently referring to the time when the Codilla patriarch, Eufrocino “Dodong” Codilla Sr. who boasts of a rags-to-riches story, wrestled power from the powerful and moneyed Larrazabal clan in 1991.
The elder Codilla’s mercurial rise to power is the stuff of legends, Lucy alluded, but unfortunately, the younger generation did not get the old man’s charm and humility.
Lucy was in high school then, and remembers the upbeat spirit of Ormoc with the entry of a fresh name in the city’s jaded political scenery. In not so many words, she said that the same jaded spirit now prevails over the district, with two generations of Codillas holding sway over it for years now.
She said that what her husband only aims is “to bring some good changes (to the district)”. Gomez had always emphasized in his sorties here that the fourth district has stagnated, and Ormoc City, once considered a premier city in the country, has been overtaken by many places.
Meanwhile, Lucy said that they refuse to “play dirty” and hopes to introduce a new kind of politics here. She said that was what they hoped to start, when Richard Gomez filed for Congress.
“Somebody has to start somewhere and somebody has to act to bring that change. It’s all about setting a good example, hoping there would be a domino effect”, Lucy added.
Lucy and the Torreses are known to be a very religious and conservative family, and old-timers welcome their entry into the political scene, hoping they would bring a “Christ-centered” kind of politics over.
Meanwhile, she also urged Richard Gomez’s supporters not to be disheartened. “We will not give up”, she said, and even said that once the official campaign season starts, she will be around to also campaign for her husband. She told supporters to have faith in God and His wisdom and to “pray for Richard”.
Meanwhile, she also said that she knew talks about her substituting for Gomez are growing stronger. “We haven’t reached that point yet in our discussions, and Richard is going to bring his case all the way to the Supreme Court”, she added, but did not say she was adverse to the idea. never been in my life I see a project worth 4oomilion plus in Ormoc., but what did I see in the so called water–blah2x project of codilla.?(400 million is a lot ha mga taga ormoc, 400 million can like build how many buildings ) codilla was once very poor and now he is the richest among all Ormocanos including very much richer than Sabin Larrazabal. It is a sad irony that a FORMER POOR MAN MAYOR can’t able to feel the hardship of his people……. the only remedy on the case of richard gomez, that if he only listens to his advisers to substitute lucy for him on the last day of filing of candidacy, perhaps he can sleep better at night and eat his breakfast with a happy face, cancellation of coc, or instant petition to deny due course, is a cancellation of a coc of a candidate, on the ground of material misrepresentation, and based on the rules of election, there is no substitution, why because it is as if there is no coc being filed,.

..goma, kung taus sa puso mo na paglingkuran ang mga kababayan ni esmi eh maglingkod ka na lang at kahit wala kang titulo ng congressman sa ngayon baka taong-bayan na mismo ang magtutulak sa iyo para ka tumakbo. sa ngayon kasi matalino na ang mga botante. yun naman naghain ng protesta sa issue ng residency mo sa ormoc, may puntos siya kasi nga naman bakit ngayon lang nga naman bigla kang nag-inarte na tumakbo bilang congressman at nabutasan pa ang pagtigil mo sa ormoc eh pasulpot-sulpot ka nga lang naman. payo ko sa yo dong, mag silbi ka muna dong sa mga magiging constituents mo. oo bah, community service dong para lahat sila diyan magkaisa na itulak ka na sa congress. ibahin mo kami dong na yagit pag kami ang umaksyon kita mo erap kahit na bigas, sardinas at noodles lang aprub sa amin dong.
im already 23 years old pero ang dalan sa highway padulong sa amo baranggay wala pa jud nahuman. .. .. .. 23 years nalang ang nilabay.. magconstruct ra og balik ig election. to think, mubo ra kaayo ang dalan. its less than half a kilometer.. pero in 23 years half pa lang ang nahuman…
im expecting them to finish it in about 10 years from now. sakto ra na naay 2 ka election para macompleto jud….. haaay..
anyway, this situation is a reflection of creating a patron-client relationship between the barangays and the city government. Most definitely, the codillas might not know what a patron-client relationship is and if its a form of misgovernance. ANyway, that’s what he is doing.
Give money and pour out projects during the election to the barangays.. if the barangays dont support him, they get nothing. since they have no choice, they have to give their support. and instead of giving everything all out, they give the barangays bits of projects so that on the next election they still have something to give to the barangays to. tsktsk.
Once people get a taste of power, it’s tough for them to let go. Power corrupts, you know. There are only very few people in history who stayed true to their ideals after people voted and empowered them. I doubt Ormoc politicians would be one of them.

I am an Ormocanon but I am here sa Cebu for work. Wala man gud tarong nga job available sa Ormoc. Ang ako brother nga ako gipaiskwela just recently graduated sa Western Leyte College pero wala siya katrabahoan. He’s confused kay wala jud siya ma-applyan. It’s either sa government (which is lisod kaayo isulod) or sa mga Banks. Commerce iya course mao na wala jud kaayo job. Mahulog ra siya sa mga lending company, tigsukot or worse is sa Gaisano. SEE? This is my point. Wala jud progress sa Ormoc City for so many years nga usa lang ka political family nag handle. Every time mouli ko, naa new building or roads, pero this is not what the people really need. We need a concrete project like job-generation projects to help the people of Ormoc. I have been working as a call center agent here in Cebu for 5 years now, and I’m tired and so miss my family. Still, wala ko choice because wala high-paying job sa Ormoc. Hopefully, the next leaders will be able to see a brighter future for us para pud makabalik na ko diha.
