BAYBAY CITY - The Binaybayon Festival and the coronation of Ms Baybay 2011 was the highlight of the fiesta activities in this city on December 27, Tuesday, that went on unmarred despite heavy rains and the Candadam River rising above its normal level early that morning.
Binaybayon Festival
The Pomponan National High School again bested six other competing national high schools both in street dancing and the showdown of the 4th Binaybayon Festival held at the Baybay National High School grandstand.
The Pomponan contingent was last year’s winner and continued to enamor the crowd with their improved dance moves and comic twists, observed Antonio “Toto” Cinco Jr., one of the judges.
A “controversial” Baybay National High School grabbed the first runner up spot. The contingent, the last to perform and already at dusk, had to restart thrice its number after technical problems plagued it. The other contingents, however, were not privy to what happened and booed their win.
Ms Thelma Zafra of the Visayas State University and one of the festival organizers had to explain that it was not the contingent’s fault.
The second runner up post went to Bunga National High School. Aside from trophies and cash prizes, the winning contingents got from the LGU certificates for school projects at P 200,000, P 150,000 and P 100,000 each, announced by no less than Mayor Carmen L. Cari herself.
The judges for the street dancing were Mr. Ernesto M. Guarino, an artist of the Department of Tourism-Region 8 and Mr. Danilo Lerios, member of critiquing team of Pintados-Kasadyaan.
For the showdown, it was Mr. Cinco, Jr., secretary-general of the Leyte Tourism Culture and Arts Council, member of the Eastern Visayas Tourism Board, and executive director of the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival; Mr. Ricky Ballesteros, organizer and founder of Pinoy Fiesta and executive director of Sinulog Foundation; and Ms. Catherine Bestil, chair of the committee judges of Sinulog Mardi Gras.
Ms Baybay City 2011 coronation
In the evening of the same day was the coronation of Miss Ronette Toyong Latorre Bathan, the ABC candidate, who was declared Miss Baybay 2011 after garnering a total of Php 1,137,907.10 “popular votes” from the first and second canvassing. The first canvassing took place last November 16, 2011 and December 17 for the second canvassing.
The first runner up is Miss Vera Zenniah A. Mojado sponsored by the LGU/National Offices who garnered Php 1,032,292.80 while the second runner up is Miss Bertyll C. Oquias, the Educator’s candidate, who got Php 624, 508.00. Miss Mary Ann C. Bandalan of the Commercial, et. al. group came as third runner up with Php 107,900.00.
