ORMOC CITY – Another violent incident took the life of a church choir member and injured three others, one of whom is at the Intensive Care Unit at the OSPA-Farmers Medical Center here, after a still unknown assailant shot them one after the other midnight before Sunday, July 29 at the notorious Mabini Street here where shabu is said to be sold just like salt in the open.
Killed on the spot was Ronaldo Linggas, 29, a choir member of the parish church in Brgy. Valencia, who suffered two shots on his chest. In critical condition up to press time is Eric Cimafranca, 32, single and a resident of Mabini Street.
Slightly wounded were John Lawrence Cormanes, 21, of Brgy. Canadieng who was grazed by a bullet on his right leg and Abraham Avila, 31, a tanod of District 4 whose back was also grazed by a bullet presumably when he docked for cover.
Witnesses told police investigators that the four were in a huddle at the front of the Ormoc Se San School compound, which had recently transferred to their new campus in Villa Theresa Subdivision at Brgy. San Isidro.
A few minutes before they were shot, a motorcycle passed by coming in from Aviles Street. After a few minutes, two men in a motorcycle also came in from the same direction and when they reached the area where the four were in a huddle, the pillion rider suddenly shoots them. Six shots rang out. Then the motorcycle riders sped away.
When they arrived at the scene of the crime, police recovered six empty slugs of a caliber 45 from the scene of the crime. PO3 Robin Orsolino, investigating officer, said they had submitted the slug to the crime laboratory already for analysis.
The police are still trying to pinpoint the motive of the shooting, and believes the fatality could was “collateral damage” and the real target was Cimafranca.
Meanwhile, sources who requested anonymity believe that the shootings were drug related and could be a vendetta between rival traders in the city. There are also rumors that the killers come from the same group that executed one Vincent Vedaurita more than a year ago and that of Maribel Martinez y Leones last February. Ironically, Maribel Martinez’s killers ambushed her on the area where the new Ormoc Se San School now stands.
The shooting incident follows closely at the heels of the brutal killing of a cellphone repairman in broad daylight just at the front of the Mother of the Redeemer Church in Cogon, this city, last July 17.
The victim was identified as Warren Sindo y Carpio, 32, a resident of Agua Dulce. Witnesses said the victim, who was riding his motorcycle, was being followed by three men in a motorcycle. They cornered him near the church and peppered him with bullets. Why, police are still trying to find out.
Two days earlier, a construction worker from Iloilo was shot on the face by a co-worker, also from Iloilo. A personal dispute reportedly was the motive but why a construction worker has a gun is unexplained.
Last June, two people were killed one day after the other at the plaza where a “peryahan” operated. In between, there were other reported violent incidents aside from thieveries and burglaries. By Paul Libres with a report from LMJ
